Love The Smell of Napalm in the Morning!
Apocalypse Now is a true masterpiece from Francis Ford Coppola.
This guy has several masterpieces on his concious. I`m talking
about The Godfather Trilogy and Bram Stoker`s Dracula. Until
recently when this movie landed in
my mailbox, I had never seen Apocalypse Now. What a way to watch
this movie for the first time on this DVD. The picture is very
good for beeing this old, and the sound is astonishing. The sounds
surrounds you and you feel apart of the movie. This is the best
movie I have seen about the madness of war. It has so many great
scenes and performances. The helicopterscenes are fabulous and I
think that many of the battlescenes are at least as good as the
scenes in Saving Private Ryan. I will not compare these two movies,
but the reality is great in both of them. Martin Sheen ( who is
brilliant ) is very young here and looks very much like Charlie
Sheen. Robert Duvall is great and so is Brando, and the
cinematography is perfect. I heard that it took 5 years to shoot
this movie, well they don`t make them like this
anymore. This movie is far better than Platoon and Full Metal
Jacket, even though they both are great movies. Apocalypse Now is
a timeless classic and I am so pleased to own this great movie on
the best format available - DVD.
Coppola is a genious as a director, and I hope Paramount soon
gives us a Special Edition of The Godfather Trilogy. Apocalypse
Now gets the best score - 6.

Apocalypse Now
Based on Joseph Conrad's book "Heart Of Darkness", Apocalypse Now is almost just as famous for all the trouble director Francis Ford Coppola had making it as it's qualities as a movie. It was supposed to be filmed in six weeks, but the shooting took over 16 months. In these times Coopola lost much weight, most of his money and the star Martin Sheen had a heartattack.
Who says you don't have to suffer for art. During the Vietnam war special ops captain Willard (Sheen) are ordered to "retire" a renegade officer named Kurtz (Brando).
He leaves the realtive sanity of Saigon and ventures up a river to find his target. As he progresses he gets more and more enveloped in the madness of war and the madness of his own mind. It's not so much a warmovie as a journey into our own darkest places. Willard goes literally and metaphorically to a place where there are no rules.
It is a great movie, but maybe even better on the second viewing.
When you have seen it, see "Hearts Of Darkness, The Apocalypse Of A Filmmaker" to really see how much trouble they had making this film.
